Cuprinol Garden Shades Review
Cuprinol Grey Fence Paint?
You may not know it but I’m overrun with women in this house.
A wife and three daughters to be precise.
I don’t tend to get a choice on paint colours, so when it was mentioned that the back garden fences and shed could do with a coat of paint, my eldest daughter was all over it.
I’m not one to argue with my eldest about design and paint colours because in all honesty she does have good choice in this department.
The choice of a grey wasn’t one that I would normally choose, I’m old school so that uniform brown or plain creosote would have been fine for me.
So on to trusty Google to find “grey fence paints” and after a few minutes discussion we (or should I say my daughter was set on Cuprinol Garden Shades Dusky Gem

Applying the Cuprinol Garden Shades
So the paint arrived and it was time to put it to the test.
The Cuprinol can be spray or brush applied. We opted for brushing.
The paint requires two coats and according to the manufacturer this should be done on the same day, if it needs to be left for whatever reason some sanding will be required. Luckily for us it was a warm sunny May day and we started early on.
On the Left of the photo is the condition of the garden fence before we applied the Cuprinol.
It had started to delaminate and fade due to weather conditions.
To the right of the photo is the first coat of paint.
The paint itself was a good consistency. It wasn’t a thin paint that got everywhere and it wasn’t a really thick paint that was tough to paint. It was just right.
The first coat looked like it may be enough but as soon as it started drying it was quickly apparent that a second coat would be needed. Ok it was a fairly warm day but this paint dries fast.
- Good consistency
- Dries back fast and to Matt finish
- Can get in large range of colours
- No smell or odours
- Easy to apply
- Pricing point
- Coverage Rate compared to competitors
Tip: Although we purchased the paint for wooden garden items it can also be applied to stone, masonry and flower pots. Make sure you cover any items you do not want covered in paint. It is difficult to remove once dry.
The paint is available at a range of DIY stores and online. One thing we did notice is that this range often gets discounted and you can pick up some decent deals from time to time. It is available in 1L, 2.5L and 5L tins
Our Verdict of Cuprinol Garden Shades
Cuprinol is one of the UK market leaders when it comes to garden paints. The paint came with big expectations and a price tag to match but it didn’t disappoint.
The paint did bring a new lease of life and dramatically changed the appearance of the garden.
The paint was a lighter blue grey tint.
The finished result is a modern matt finish but it also allows the grain of wood to show through.
It was a quality paint to apply and the colour dries back to the expected shade and finish.
The Daughters and wife were happy with the finished result and I enjoyed the task of applying it.
We cant comment on the protection it offers yet but we will update once a few of the elements/ seasons attack the areas.
